A CHEQUE for £500 has been handed over to the Royston branch of the Royal British Legion for its Poppy Appeal. The cheque was donated by the trade union Amicus and presented to the branch by Alan Drury, who represents the Eastern regional council of the union for retired members. Mr Drury, who is standard bearer for the branch, proposed at a meeting last year that Amicus should make a donation to the Poppy Appeal. He was presented with the cheque by Adrian Oxtel, the regional director of Amicus. In turn Mr Drury handed the cheque over to branch chairman, Joe McDonald at a ceremony also attended by branch president George Ellis and club chairman Jack Smith. The branch this year has so far raised £17,443 - more than £2,000 up on last year's branch record of £15,300.
