PLAY areas in Royston could soon become fume free as part of a new scheme designed to stub out smoking.
North Herts District Council announced the measures in a bid to stop kids picking up the habit in later life, protect them from second hand smoke and prevent litter.
The No Smoking signs will be put up in all 51 council owned areas but will not make smoking in them illegal and the measure is not enforcable.
Councillor Bernard Lovewell, NHDC’s tobacco control champion and portfolio holder for Housing and Environmental Health, said: “Extending smoke free environments to include children’s outside play areas is one of a number of measures we are taking to help reduce the number of people who smoke in North Herts.
“Children learn behaviour from adults so by reducing their exposure to smoking and adult smokers as role models we will be able to protect our children’s health and let them play outside in a healthy smoke free environment.”
