A BAN on heavy goods vehicles using Melbourn Road in Royston would cost too much, says Hertfordshire Highways. It told Royston town councillors a seven-and-a-half-ton weight limit would cost about £23,000. A letter sent to members of the Royston Town Council's highways and transport committee said introducing the weight limit could cost an estimated £23,000. Cllr Rod Kennedy said, however: "I think that says everything we need to know about Hertfordshire Highways. "I find the costs absolutely astounding. "We are not asking for rocket science - we are asking for a sign. It's appalling - no wonder the council tax is so high." Royston county councillor Doug Drake, who attended the meeting, said the costs appeared "alarmingly high". "There's little you can do about it," he said. "It applies throughout local authorities' work. It's a fact of life - costs are high." The issue, however, is to be raised with members of North Hertfordshire District Council's Royston area committee.
