The development of Aldi and an M&S Foodhall in Royston could be completed next year.

Planning permission was granted by North Herts District Council for the development between York Way and the A505 at the end of September 2017, and the view of the building work now in progress can be seen along the A505 between the McDonald’s and Tesco roundabouts.

An Aldi spokeswoman said: “Construction work at our new Royston store is progressing well. We hope to open the store next year and will keep the community updated on developments.”

And a spokeswoman for M&S said: “We’re looking forward to bringing a new Marks & Spencer Foodhall to Royston and we will update the community as plans for the store progress.”

The 30-acre site was originally given planning permission for one food store in 2014 part of the multi-million pound Royston Gateway project.

When revised planning permission was granted for the two stores last year, district councillor David Barnard, then chairman of NHDC’s planning control committee, said: “The proposal for the Royston Gateway offers significant benefits for the residents of Royston and the users of its industrial area.

“Not only does it represent a significant investment for Royston, it is a diversified retail offering which is well supported by Royston Town Council and the residents of Royston.”

Plans state that M&S and Aldi stores would share 170 parking bays, including 10 spaces for Blue Badge holders, and the medium-sized M&S Foodhall would also incorporate a customer café.

There will also be new junction for the A505 and a new link road to Orchard Road Industrial Estate.
