AN AIR ambulance came to the aid of a stricken sledger on Therfield Heath on Sunday.

The helicopter touched down on Sunday afternoon, but in the end its services were not required.

Gary Sanderson, spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service, said: "We got called up to the Heath at about 1.50pm after a 13-year old boy was injured when he fell off his sledge.

"Because of the snow, we thought the air ambulance would be required, but in the end the paramedics managed to get to him ok.

"He was taken to Lister Hospital in Stevenage by land ambulance and treated for minor injuries."

Elsewhere in Crow Country, families were out enjoying the snow which fell throughout the day on Friday, causing most schools in the area to shut down for the day.

One little girl was left disappointed when her sledge was stolen from outside the Heath Sports Club.

The five-year old's toboggan was taken when she and her mum stopped off for a hot chocolate.

The girl's mother, said: "Not only did the thief ruin the rest of our day and weekend, but they also made a five-year-old girl cry all the way home."

Industrious residents of Hardy Drive, Royston, built a snow wall using bricks moulded in food containers.

An igloo sprang up in the grounds of Guy Snell's property in Market Hill, Royston.

However, Mr Snell was left counting the cost of the cold snap, when snow and ice caused a large chunk of his listed flint wall to collapse.

No one was injured.
