Her novels range, in her own words, from the epic, to the comic, to frothy fun and the 'downright unclassifiable'.

Now acclaimed author Sarah Harrison will be revealing all about her eclectic body of work, her life and experiences with a talk at Melbourn’s All Saints Church on Saturday night.

Sarah has been writing stories since she was eight, when she weas filling exercise books with tales about anthropomorphic animal heroes and ‘rather less believable human ones.’

She went on to read English at university, before working for four years on Woman’s Own magazine.

But it was when was her novel The Flowers of the Field, a book set in the First World War told from a woman’s angle, became a bestseller that Sarah, who lives in Steeple Morden, really established herself as a writer.

She said: “It’s the book that changed my life, and it occupies a very special place in my affections.”

As well as two further books in what went on to become the Flowers trilogy, she went on to write The Red Dress, Matters Arising, A Spell of Swallows and An Imperfect Lady, and her success has led to her appearing on TV, from Question Time to quiz shows.

Sarah says: “I’m less a write-about-what-you-know author as a write-about-what-you-feel one.

“I always have a synopsis, and a title before I start, but as the story starts to spool out in my imagination, I climb inside it, and try to pass on the experience to the reader.

“The Supporters of All Saints Church can expect a lighthearted evening with plenty of laughs, based around my 40 years as a published author – and latterly as an entertainer, too.

“The Flowers of the Field was set in the Great War, a period we’re all currently commemorating, so I shall almost certainly touch on that as well.

“This will not be a literary lecture, but a look at life – free-ranging and, I hope, fun.”

Wine and nibbles will be included at the event hosted by The Supporters of All Saints Church, Melbourn.
