The total number of people who have signed the Crow’s Make the A505 Safer campaign petition has surpassed 3,000.

We started the petition to Herts County Council back in January to show strength of feeling in the call for change on the A505 between Royston and Baldock.

While we hear of crashes all the way up to Duxford, the majority of incidents and near-misses occur between the two Herts towns.

This is why we have concentrated our efforts here – where the road is 70mph, is dotted with cut-through junctions in the central reservation for access to villages, has slip lanes that are short to be safe, poor visibility and a real problem with wrong-way drivers.

Since our campaign launched we have heard from many residents of Royston – including tireless campaigner Lynsey Langdon – motorists, villagers, MP Sir Oliver Heald, district and county councillors and more, who have shared their concerns.

The feasibility study into traffic on the road concluded at the end of March, and since then the county council has been consulting with members.

There have been calls for roundabouts at the Odsey and Slip End junctions, but we haven’t heard anything beyond that and nothing is set in stone.

Yes, ultimately it’s drivers who are responsible and of course if you’re behind the wheel you should be making sensible decisions and taking all due care, but the layout of this road and the speed people are travelling on it means what could be a little mistake could easily become a much more significant incident.

We at the Crow believe there should at least be a roundabout at Odsey, the busiest junction – but this will take time, so dropping the speed limit to 50mph between the Royston McDonald’s and the radio station junction towards Baldock will only help give motorists more time to get across the carriageways safely until structural changes are made.

We encourage those who haven’t signed our petition to do so if you support our call. We intend to present this to Herts County Council next month.
