METAPHORS, similes and rhyming couplets were the call of the day at Greneway School in Royston. Poet Robert Hull spent "a lively day" discussing and writing poetry with more than 140 pupils from schools around Royston. Mr Hull went to the school to spend the day with pupils from Year 3 to Year 5, with the hope of "enthusing young writers about poetry". Caroline Neale, head of English at Greneway, said: "The pupils were given different topics and starting points for poems throughout the day, and Mr Hull stopped them at various points to see how they were doing, he used to be a teacher, which is very useful." The main focus of the day was on student participation. Mr Hull also wrote a poem especially for the occasion. It was called Magic Misspell and was a light-hearted poem based around a misspelling of the word Royston. Mrs Neale added: "It was a real success and we were able to develop the links between schools in the area.
