7-year-old girl in critical condition after hotel plunge

A SEVEN-year-old girl is said to be in a critical condition after plunging 30ft from a hotel window.

And police in Majorca have begun a search for her mother who disappeared after the incident.

The girl, who was reported to come from Foxton, was said to have had a broken jaw and liver injuries.

The Foreign Office said it was aware of an incident at the Hotel Samoa in Calas de Majorca.

Local journalist Humphrey Carter of the Majorca Daily Bulletin told the BBC that he understood the girl was taken to the Manacor Hospital and later transferred to the Son Dureta Hospital.

He told the BBC: "By the time the ambulance had arrived the mother had gone missing."

He said he believed the family has taken two rooms at the three-star hotel: one room was shared by the father and two sons and the other room by the mother and her daughter.

The Daily Mail reported that the girl came from Foxton and attended the Foxton Primary School.

Police in Majorca have named the girl as Gianna Cooper and confirmed that they are looking for her mother, Sara Cooper, who disappeared shortly after her daughter plunged from a hotel balcony.

A police spokesman said: “We are looking for the mother, but at this stage we do not want to speculate.

“We are searching for her in the area of Calas de Majorca, which is an area containing mountains and a beach.”

A hospital spokesman said that Gianna was no longer on the critical list. Her condition was described as “serious, but stable”.

A news agency report said Sara, 45, and her husband, Martin, had recently moved to a £600,000 house in Foxton from Welwyn Garden City.

Mr Cooper was said to work in the Cambridge science community and until recently was believed to be treasurer of the Foxton Tennis Club.

The news agency reported that Mrs Cooper was a registered child minder and it thought to have been a trained chemist.
