Poppy sellers in Royston were presented with awards on Sunday in recognition for their hard work giving up their time for the Poppy Appeal.

Volunteers receive an award for every five years of service and Poppy Appeal organiser Lorraine MacLeod said: “It was lovely to see our volunteers coming together and enjoying some food and music and thanking them for all of their hard work.

“The awards ranged from five years up to 50 years, the average award being 40 years which is a massive achievement, but 50 years is an astonishing amount of time and was awarded to F John Smith.”

Royston mayor Sarah Dingley and Royal British Legion branch chairman Chris Murphy presented the awards, and the ceremony was sponsored by The Royston Poppy Appeal team and the town’s Tesco.

Lorraine said they always need volunteers. Search ‘Royston Poppy Appeal’, send an email to roystonpoppyteam@gmail.com, or call 07906 241609 for more.
