There are plenty of nostalgic film clips from the 1970s which offer a rare glimpse into everyday life in Hertfordshire half a century ago.

The footage, filmed in towns across the county, reveals a world of marching bands, modern housing estates and state-of-the-art military jets - a time capsule of a bygone era.

Features scenes from Stevenage, Hatfield, Letchworth, Hitchin and Welwyn Garden City, they offer a stunning window into the past.

Stevenage

A remastered section of a documentary film offers a glimpse of Stevenage in 1971.

It captures the New Town, showing daily life, housing developments, shopping areas and transport networks.

Some town centre landmarks shown in the film remain recognisable today.

Stevenage was an ambitious post-war project and entered what residents often described as a golden era during the 1970s.

As the town turns 80 this year, the film offers an incredible glimpse into its past.

Hatfield

Dating back to 970AD, Hatfield is one of Hertfordshire's most historic towns.

It also has a storied aviation past as the home of the de Havilland Aircraft Company and later Hawker Siddeley.

RAF jets regularly roared over the town, with a 1970 clip from British Pathe showing just that as the new Harrier, Buccaneer and Nimrod aircraft are shown to senior Royal Air Force officers.

Letchworth

Letchworth is still a buzzing town with plenty of events every year, but one that no longer takes place is the old British tradition of the carnival.

Footage filmed sometime in the 1970s was shot on Station Road, and shows passing floats, a marching band and smiling crowds watching from the roadside.

The film also captures historic buildings in the background, many of which remain standing today.

Hitchin

During the 1970s, Hitchin's identity was still that of a market town, but it was during this decade that it began becoming the commuter town it is today.

The town is a little over 30 minutes from London by rail, making it a place where people working in the capital could settle.

Video shot in 1975 shows Hitchin Railway Station, with goods trains and some passenger services pass through.

The footage provides a record of the changes that followed.

Welwyn Garden City

Welwyn Garden City was another of Hertfordshire's eutopia towns in the 1970s.

Footage filmed around 1970 captures the town centre, residential streets including Carve Ley and Great Ganett, and local school children.

It provides a record of daily life in one of Britain's pioneering Garden Cities and offers a fascinating look at how the Hertfordshire town has changed over the past half century.
