A Hemel school followed “lockdown procedure” after a report that someone had weapons nearby.
Police were called to Cambrian Way, Hemel Hempstead, at 12.28pm yesterday after reports of an incident.
A man was reportedly seen carrying what were believed to be weapons.
The force said the primary school was closed as officers dealt with the incident.
Hammond Academy head Kerry Graham told The Herts Advertiser the school went into lockdown.
She said: "As a precaution, learners and staff remained in school while the situation was assessed and the appropriate agencies were contacted. At all times, the safety and wellbeing of our school community remained our highest priority.
"The situation was resolved safely and normal activities resumed following confirmation that it was appropriate to do so."
Officers were supported by the police helicopter as they carried out a thorough search of the area.
Two men were detained and helped officers with their enquiries before being ruled out.
The force stayed found there was no ongoing threat and no weapons had been found.
Mrs Graham added: "We would like to thank our staff and learners for the calm and responsible manner in which they responded. We are particularly proud of our learners, who followed instructions exceptionally well throughout.
"The school will continue to provide reassurance and support to any pupils or staff who may need it."
Remaining officers conducted reassurance patrols at school end time before leaving the scene.
