Cyclists and walkers will make their way along the off-road paths connecting Cambridge and Melbourn this weekend for the 11th annual A10 Awareness Ride.

The event takes place on Sunday, June 9, and is co-sponsored by the A10 Corridor Cycling Campaign, CamCyle and the Meldreth, Shepreth and Foxton Community Railway Partnership.

Their aim is to improve safe sustainable travel options for people living and working along the A10 corridor between Royston and Cambridge - with a Melbourn-Royston connection now on the horizon.

A10 Corridor Cycling Campaign chair Susan van de Ven said: "Cycling to work or college, for errands or to visit family and friends, and even for hospital visits, can be the fastest and least stressful way of getting from A to B, especially as congestions grows around Cambridge.

"Meanwhile, walking locally is proving increasingly popular for many reasons, including better health."

Vice chair Adam Bostanci added: "It has been fantastic to witness the popularity of these paths.

"People of all ages, whether on bike or on foot, sometimes with buggies and sometimes on mobility scooters, rely on these paths and enjoy using them.

"Equally, regular commuting users enjoy discovering new parts of the route that enable them to cycle away from road traffic anywhere between Cambridge and Melbourn.

"I still meet people who don't know about the Trumpington Meadows bypass that avoids the M11 roundabout.

"The annual Awareness Ride is a great opportunity for anyone who’d like to familiarize themselves with the off-road A10 corridor route available to us."

Plans are currently in progress for the Melbourn Greenway, allowing for sustainable travel between Melbourn and Royston.

Susan said: "Looking ahead, we know how keenly awaited the Melbourn-Royston connection is and are delighted that it is now firmly on the Melbourn Greenway plan, with detailed planning work beginning.

"We’ve a way to go yet but patience and perseverance will pay off."

The cycle ride on June 9 leaves from Trumpington Park and Ride at 10.30am, finishing at Phillimore Garden Centre front lawn for refreshments, including fruit donations from Tesco.

The walking contingent leaves from the Melbourn Hub at 11am, and participants should bring their own water bottle.
