The owner of a five-year-old springer spaniel has launched a fundraising appeal to fix her dog's damaged legs.

Sam Cameron adopted Whiskey as a rescue in October 2023. Before he arrived at the rescue centre he sustained a broken leg, which was never treated properly and healed at a wonky angle.

Whiskey is now under the care of East of England Veterinary Specialists in Royston, and is in need of expensive surgery to save both his legs.

Sam, who lives in Farcet near Peterborough, said: "During his health check after I adopted him, the vet became concerned about the stability of Whiskey's left leg and we booked in X-rays.

"The results were worse than I could have ever imagined.

"Whiskey has no normal anatomy left in his leg, his humerus and radius are completely misaligned which must cause him great pain although he doesn't show it.

"One of the screws in his leg is also believed to have snapped and impaled itself in the bone.

"There was an extra shock when the X-rays also revealed a previous break in his right leg that wasn't known about. "

Vets discussed a possible amputation - but it is unlikely Whiskey would cope with this due to the damage to his right leg.

Therefore, they plan to do an operation to fuse the bones, which will reduce the amount of pain Whiskey is in, stabilise the leg and hopefully reduce the risk of further problems as Whiskey gets older.

The surgery, which is provisionally scheduled for April, is estimated to cost between £5,500 and £6,000, not including physio and aftercare that Whiskey will require.

Sam has set up a GoFundMe for Whiskey at https://www.gofundme.com/f/whiskeys-wonky-leg.

A community dog walking group has also donated vouchers to be raffled off to raise money.

Sam said: "Whiskey is such a happy, bouncy boy who brings joy and smiles to everyone he meets - a typical spaniel and professional sock thief.

"He has had such a difficult start in life.

"I want to give him the best forever home and hopefully for him to be pain free and being able to do all the things he loves."
