Children from Therfield First School delivered treats to people in the community as part of their annual Harvest 'Gift of Giving' project.

Each year, pupils bake treats which are then delivered to 170 houses - in previous years giving out posies of flowers, cupcakes, cookies, chocolate muffins, scones and more.

This year's treat was orange shortbread biscuits, made from ingredients donated by Mandy Jinkerson and Tesco Extra.

Every pupil in the school helped prepare more than 700 biscuits in a mass baking session in the school hall, helped by parent volunteers.

The biscuits were then baked in a "mammoth" carousel operation while the school cook was using the oven to make the pupils' lunch.

Once the biscuits were cooled, the children made personalised tags and gift parcels - with three biscuits in each parcel.

The next morning all pupils, who are aged between four and nine, helped deliver the biscuits in the village and wish people a 'Happy Harvest'.

Where nobody was at home, the biscuits were left on their doorstep to greet the village upon their return.

Pupils wore harvest-themed costumes to deliver the biscuits, dressing as fishermen, farmers, fruit and even a tractor and combine harvester.

The project was started nine years ago, when headteacher Tara McGovern joined the school.

Tara said: "The aim was to spread positivity around the village and for the children to experience the wonderful gift of giving.

"Some residents rarely have visitors so how lovely it would be to answer the door to young children bearing smiles and a treat!

"Our children gain so much from this project each year and they eagerly look forward to it."

As usual, the project met with an "overwhelming" response from visitors, and the school was inundated with phone calls, emails, letters and cards thanking the individual children.

One villager wrote: "Thank you Cody for your lovely harvest wishes and your big happy smile at my door. It is my favourite day of the year in the village."

Another said:" Big thanks to the superstar Amber (age six)…baker, packaging specialist and logistics expert in home deliveries."
