The Waggon and Horses pub in Steeple Morden has appointed its youngest-ever landlady, who is just 18 years old.

Rhianna Geraghty was promoted to landlady after working at the Church Street pub for two years.

She said: "It was overwhelming, and very exciting at the same time. It's a big challenge taking on the pub.

"I got a waitressing job here when I was 16 and I've worked here ever since - I really enjoy it.

"I get on really well with the regulars, and everyone's very supportive and respectful."

The landlady vacancy became available after Rhianna's boss - the pub's proprietor Chris Collier - took on a second pub, and moved away to be closer to his son.

Rhianna said: "So far it's been really, really good. The pub is having so much support from everyone, and new people are coming in already."

After taking on the role, Rhianna is full of ideas for the pub's future.

"I'd really like to push our food," she said. "We've got a massive pub garden which has been neglected, and I'd like to get more seating and live music and bands.

"I'd make it a pub for everybody of all ages. We get a few football teams in here, and cyclists and cricket teams in the summer."

Rhianna explained that she wants the pub to appeal to more than just drinkers, with plans to introduce coffee mornings and brunches, and to welcome women and families rather than just their predominantly male customers.

She said: "It's really nice to have everyone's support. A lot of people in the village come into the pub.

"People need to remember pubs are an asset to the village and if you don't use it, it will go - not just for me but for all the regulars who drink in the pub."

Waggon and Horses proprietor Chris added: "Rhianna has worked extremely hard over the last three months preparing for this promotion.

"I have no doubt she will do a fantastic job. She's a very strong, independent young woman and has the full support of the regulars."
