A 'unique and audacious' retelling of Jane Austen's classic love story Pride and Prejudice is coming to Cambridge.
Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of) heads to the Cambridge Arts Theatre direct from its triumph at the West End, where it won the Laurence Olivier Award for best comedy.
In this irreverent but affectionate adaptation, characters will fight over men, money and microphones - and the stakes could not be higher when it comes to romance.
The show, described as 'smart' and 'laugh out loud funny' by the Daily Telegraph, features a string of pop classics including 'Young Hearts Run Free', 'Will You Love Me Tomorrow' and 'You're So Vain'.
A cast of six to seven actors, including actors from the West End production, will play multiple roles each. Among them are Christina Gordon, who was Olivier-nominated in this role as a supporting actress, and Isobel McArthur, who is also the adaptor of the play.
Actor, writer and comedian Stephen Fry praised the show, saying: "Hilarity, romance, madness and utter theatrical joy. The whole house rose to its feet and cheered and cheered."
The Daily Telegraph commented that the show "deserves the standing ovations its getting nightly".
Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice has sold more than 200 million copies worldwide, and has spawned highly popular film and television adaptations - including the 1995 BBC series with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, and the 2005 film starring Keira Knightley and Matthew McFadyen.
The well-known story is frequently adapted to suit modern audiences, as in the case of Bridget Jones' Diary and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of) is the next adaptation to bring a modern take on this novel.
The show has been described by the Daily Mail as "completely faithful to the book but also a raucously irreverent romp" and as a "mischievous, joyous new take on the novel" by the Financial Times.
Performances run from Monday, November 14 to Saturday, November 19 at 7.30pm, with matinee performances at 2.30pm on the Thursday and Saturday.
