Brownies from Girlguiding Cambridgeshire East, including a pack from Orwell, became the first group ever to sleep over at Duxford Imperial War Museum.

More than 500 Brownies and 100 leaders spent the night 'sleeping under the wings' on Saturday, October 15.

They set up camp under Concorde, Hastings, Vulcan, Avro York Lightning and TSR2 Aircraft for the night.

After learning some fascinating facts about Concorde, the Berlin Airlift during the Cold War, and hearing about women aviators from Duxford's own storyteller, they ended the evening with a classic campfire singalong before bed.

As well as the excitement of sleeping in the airspace hangar, the Brownies worked on their space and aviation interest badges. This involved engineering paper aeroplanes, making bi-planes out of pegs, and making space jars and space suits.

On Sunday the Brownies explored more of the Duxford museums, visiting the American Air Museum, Battle of Britain and Land Warfare exhibitions.

Brownies aims to encourage girls aged seven to 10 to try new things and learn more about themselves, their community and their world, and events such as 'sleeping under the wings' are organised by volunteers to help them do just that.
