A supermarket security guard suffered a broken arm when he was punched as he tried to stop two people suspected of shoplifting.
The attack happened at Hatfield town centre’s Asda on Saturday (November 8) between 5.15pm and 5.35pm.
Police have released CCTV images of a man and a woman they would like to identify as part of their investigation.
Det Con Andrew Greenman said: “This attack has left an innocent man, who was just doing his job, with a veery serious injury.
“We would like to identify the two people pictured as quickly as possible as they may have information about the assault which will assist us with the investigation.”
Just one blow left the security guard with a broken arm as he attempted to stop the thieves, who then made off.
Anyone who recognises the people pictured should contact Det Con Greenman via Herts Constabulary’s non-emergency number 101, quoting crime reference B2/14/4039. Alternatively call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
