“It’s time to go shopping” so says Biggleswade Town boss Chris Nunn after a run of disappointing results.

Following the Wader’s 5-0 loss at home to Wingate and Finchley in their last match on Saturday, manager Nunn posted a tweet to his Twitter account which read ‘time to go shopping’, suggesting he wants to alter his squad.

The Wingate and Finchley defeat followed a 2-0 loss to struggling St Ives Town and a 2-0 loss at Chesham United in their two previous games, totalling three defeats in their last three games without scoring a goal.

Naturally, Nunn’s tweet raises a few questions. Which players was the tweet aimed at? Nunn will have spoken individually to his players, of course, and Waders fans will naturally be interested in who the tweet was meant for.

Nunn said he ‘couldn’t name names’, and when pressed further, he insisting that he did not want to ‘single out any individuals’ in the squad. But he did expand on what he found shocking about the Wingate and Finchley defeat.

“As I said in the tweet, the lack of passion was noticeable. These are young boys we’ve got, it’s a developing squad’ he said. ‘An important thing to remember is that it’s the first year in full-time employment for many of them.”

He continued: “Some of them are only eighteen or nineteen years old. But we’ve definitely looked fragile recently - we looked like glass at times against Wingate and Finchley.”

In terms of what needs to be done to improve the squad, Nunn’s views are clear. He said: “What we need at the moment is to bring in three or four experienced players with two years of experience at level three at a minimum - ideally three years experience.”

‘In terms of positions I’d like to strengthen in, I’d like to buy another defender, another midfielder and another forward’ Nunn added. “We’re strong in the centre of the park at the moment, but another wide man would be good addition.”

Of course, Biggleswade is not as big a place as several towns in the league, which makes it harder to compete. What do the Waders need to do to stay competitive and move up the table? Nunn’s view is open-minded and refreshingly honest.

“We have to be realistic’ he said. ‘We simply do not have the resources to to compete with the top teams over the course of a league season. But we can compete in one-off games against the top teams, as our draw against Kettering Town (who are currently fourth) proved.

“We haven’t got the financial clout at the moment to compete with the Kettering Towns or the Slough Towns of this world, but our attitude is something we can control. We have to man up - starting with the trip to Dorchester on Saturday.”

Dorchester are currently twentieth in the league, five places below Biggleswade. They should provide a real chance for the Waders to gain three points and turn their season around.

Nunn’s message to his squad in the coming weeks could not be clearer. He said: “The players – especially the youngsters – have a real chance to show their character from now on, and I believe they will’.
