A RENOVATED square in the centre of Royston will officially open on Saturday.

A ribbon cutting ceremony for Fish Hill Square, which cost 400,000 to renew, will take place at 11am with Cllr Michael Weeks, chairman of North Herts District Council (NHDC) doing the honours.

An exhibition explaining the background and progress of the project will also be held on the day, with businesses on the square joining in the celebrations and musical entertainment provided by Meridian School pupils.

Marshalls estate agents will also be running a special competition for visitors to the square raising funds for this year’s Children in Need.

Money from central government’s Growth Area Fund paid for the work which includes new paving and a pedestrian area, seating in and around the square, and newly planted trees.

One of the new landmarks in the square is a sculpture by Meridian School student Vicki Chapman, whose design references key aspects of Royston’s history.

New car parking restrictions will come into force to assist with improved traffic management of the area and make it more pedestrian friendly, while the popular ‘Free After 3’ parking scheme will continue to be in operation.

Cllr Tom Brindley, NHDC’s portfolio holder for planning, transport and enterprise, said: “The idea behind this project was to create a new focal point for Royston making it a more attractive place to visit and bringing more trade to the town centre. Clearly it’s great news that the work has been completed on time and on budget, and I look forward to seeing this lead to further investment in the town.

“I hope that people in Royston can come along to the completed square on 19 November and show their support to the local businesses who have been patient while work was carried out.”
