A COUPLE who are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary have had a congratulatory card from the Queen.
George and May Hyslop, of Cherry Drive in Royston, were in for a surprise when the Queen – who herself is celebrating 60 years on the throne with her Diamond Jubilee in June – had a message sent by special delivery.
“It was a complete surprise but it was wonderful,” said May, 78.
“We are really thrilled with it – I thought it was only for when you’re 100!”
Their daughter Deborah Akers contacted the British monarchy and told them about the Hyslop’s diamond wedding anniversary, before making sure her parents would be in when it arrived.
“I don’t know if it’s because it’s the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee but we’re really pleased,” said May, who has lived in Royston with George, 81, for the last decade.
The couple, who met in north London through George’s sister in 1950, went to Haringay Speedway Club together and have been an item ever since.
They married at St Mary’s Church in Hornsey, London, on March 22, 1952.
Asked for the secret to their longevity, May added: “It’s the old story – give and take and a sense of humour.
“Laugh at some of your troubles and you’ll get through.”
