RESURFACING is needed in a residential street to repair a “trench” which has deepened during recent bad weather.

That’s according to resident Maureen Butler, who has been calling for action on the road surface in Icknield Walk, Royston.

Mrs Butler, of The Close, Royston, said: “The road surface has been breaking up and I’ve been trying to get something done about it for nearly two years. It has slowly been getting worse and worse.

“The council come out sometimes and do repairs but this doesn’t solve the problem, what it needs is complete resurfacing.”

The 62-year-old believes the state of the road could cause a safety risk for drivers and pedestrians, including children who use nearby schools such as The Meridian School and Icknield Walk First School.

She said: “Several of the roads are in a bad way and it’s very dangerous, especially where children are concerned.

“Unfortunately I don’t seem to be getting anywhere.”

Mrs Butler contacted Labour district councillor Rob Inwood about the situation.

Cllr Inwood said: “The road is an utter disgrace. All we are seeing at the moment is temporary work on the potholes when there should be resurfacing of the area.

“The residents we spoke to have been complaining for months about the condition of Icknield Walk and the surrounding roads, but nothing seems to have been done.

“This should be a priority because the longer this situation exists then the worse it will get.

“In Icknield Walk there is virtually a trench that runs along the middle of the road.”

Highways repairs are carried out by Hertfordshire County Council’s contractor, Ringway Group. The firm had failed to provide the Crow with a comment at the time of going to press.

Cllr Stuart Pile, cabinet member for highways and transport at Hertfordshire County Council, said: “Winter weather is particularly damaging for roads. The formation of potholes during wintry weather is caused by rain water and thawing snow seeping into small cracks in the road.

“Our highways contractor, Ringway, is working hard making repairs on our behalf, fixing over 5,000 faults last month. Residents are encouraged to report any highway problems to us on www.hertsdirect.org/highwayfaults.”
