Plans to build 170 houses, 40 per cent of which would be classified as affordable, have been put forward to Meldreth Parish Council by prospective developers.

The houses would be built on agricultural land in Whaddon Road, as close to the Fenny Lane crossroads and village centre as possible.

Susan van de Ven, who represents the village on Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “It is outside the village envelope and takes advantage of a window created by the suspension of the draft South Cambridgeshire Local Plan.

“The developers state the Eternit Sport and Social Club amenities would remain in place.

“Much work would be required to understand new demands on public services – doctors, schools and highways – and where the funding would come from to pay for it.”

In response to a question put forward by Jose Hales, who sits on South Cambs District Council, the developer confirmed that 40 per cent of the development would be for affordable homes. A public consultation is planned in the new year.
