Children in Royston got to take part in a whole host of firefighter-themed activities at the weekend as the town’s fire station opened its doors on Saturday for an afternoon of family-friendly fun.
There was a smoke experience tent, rescue demonstrations and a teddy bear parachute jump at the station in Baldock Street.
The kids and their parents got to look around the fire engines, could try on helmets and jackets, and even meet rescue labrador Reqs, who helps the Herts Fire & Rescue Service to investigate incidents.
Crew commander Ray Constant has been a firefighter for 26 years.
“At the smoke experience tent, the children go blindfolded and had to find a dummy of Naughty Norman from Fireman Sam,” Ray said.
“We also had a driving simulator showing what to do in a crash, and a police car and ambulance for the kids to get in and have a look at.”
“The real draw is the parachute jump, where they can watch their teddy drop from 50ft high and glide gently back to them.
“The annual day is to the general public, but the children get the most out of it.
“It was enjoyed by all.”
