‘This support is remarkable and extremely welcome’ – Royston retirement home residents raise more than £600 for Meldreth mental heath charity

Manager of the retirement home in Fish Hill, Angela Johnson, her team and residents were thrilled with the £665 total.

“We raise money for a different charity every year, all year round, by doing raffles, baking cakes, quizes and having bric-a-brac stalls, ” she said.

“Each year we want to choose a local charity, and considering there’s not many of us we’ve raised quite a lot so we’re very pleased.”

The MindEd Trust was set up by Meldreth’s Steve Mallen after his teenage son Edward ended his own life in February 2015, and it is focused on the prevention of mental illness in young people and early intervention strategies for those experiencing trauma.

Mr Mallen told the Crow: “It has been a little over two years since the tragic death of my son, Edward and the support extended to The MindEd Trust from across Crow Country continues to be remarkable and extremely welcome.

“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all the kind folks at Kennedy Court for their support throughout last year. It is exactly this type of community initiative which not only raises valuable funds but also helps to promote awareness of mental illness and the terrible burden this is placing on our young people.

“The Trust is developing mental health programmes in schools across Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire and has made great progress in seeking reform at a national level. The Kennedy Court monies will go directly towards assisting young people in our community and we commend all the hard work of those involved.”

The next causes the home will raise funds for are C2 children’s ward at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and Royston and District Community Transport.
