A Royston retirement home resident who nearly didn’t survive after being born premature is celebrating turning 100 today and enjoyed a surprise birthday coffee morning earlier this week.
Ora Tydeman has lived at Kennedy Court in Fish Hill since it opened 12 years ago, and the gathering organised by staff on Monday was a “complete suprise” to her.
Home manager Angela Johnson said: “We threw a very special coffee morning for Ora, but we had to wait until her family were here so we could get everything ready as we didn’t want her to walk in on the suprise!
“She had a lovely time and enjoyed her day with her family, as well as her friends and neighbours at Kennedy Court.”
Only child Ora was born prematurely and nearly died coming into the world in Hornchurch, Essex, a century ago.
She trained as a legal secretary and married Bill in 1942. The couple had two children, Robert and Elizabeth, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Before Bill died in 1993, the couple were involved for many years in amateur dramatics, winning several awards.
Ora, who attends Bassingbourn parish church, is spending today with family in Bassingbourn and Barrington.
