Grandmother looking to trace good Samaritans who helped her after fall in Royston

Joan Brown had just been to the hairdressers and was on George Lane when she fell over on Saturday, June 10.

She told the Crow: “I was having my hair done, as it was my birthday and I was being taken for lunch that weekend, but we had to cancel.

“I fell, I put my arms up to protect myself but hit my face, and I ended up on my back.”

Mrs Brown thinks about half a dozen people rushed over to help her, including a girl with a phone, a young man who dabbed tissue on her head, a man with children and a man who she thinks brought her a chair out of Royston Tandoori.

Mrs Brown was told there would be a three-hour wait for an ambulance, and the good Samaritans fetched a chair from the curry house and waited with her. It was only when they got hold of her grandson Harry that he was able to take her to hospital.

It wasn’t the first time Mrs Brown had been hurt out in public – the previous incident happened on the same day three years earlier.

She said: “The day before my 80th, when my partner was in hospital with cancer, I had a car accident at the pedestrian crosssing. I remember being so tired and it was so hot, and the next thing I knew I was across the road and had split my head open.”

And some time prior to that Mrs Brown fell in Market Hill opposite the library, and was helped by a lady there.

The mother-of-two and grandmother to Harry and Frankie, who moved to the town from London 46 years ago, added: “Royston is a lovely little town and people are so helpful.

“Both my grandchildren are very good to me, and I do have people looking out for me.

“Where I live now my neighbours are fantastic, they come and check on me and make sure I’m still alive.

“I want to be up and about again soon, so I can go out with family and friends. I may be old, but mentally I’m like a teenager!”
