Children in Need fundraisers have been getting stuck in with all sorts of activities to drum up cash over the past week.
It was announced during the telethon on Friday night that £50.1 million had been raised for the cause – and funds were boosted by groups in Royston, including Annabelle Walsh, 9, and friends who completed a sponsored ramble on Therfield Heath.
They raised £180 and Annabelle said: “It’s important to do something for children who aren’t as lucky as we are.”
Annabelle’s mum Julie said: “We’re very proud of Annabelle and her friends Freya and Kirsten for coming up with the idea and for all of their hard work in organising the event.
“It was a great morning. We were blessed with beautiful weather and fantastic company. Thank you to everyone who came and supported the girls.”
Roysia Middle School raised more than £250 by holding a talent contest for pupils to showcase their skills.
A spokeswoman told the Crow: “The hosts this year were Iona Berry and Ciaran Meehan and they both did an amazing job.
“The judges were bowled over by the variety and standard of the acts from all year groups. Year 7’s Ria Duffy took the title with her stunning singing, second place went to Freddie Brazil from Year 6 with his fantastic cards tricks, and Year 8’s Francesca Hill took third place with her super acrobatic performance.
“Headteacher Laura Rawlings, who took the role of head judge and dressed as Pudsey, said that all the acts performed on the day really did prove that Roysia definitely has got talent!”
Pupils at Greneway Middle School collected round pounds and had a non-uniform day to raise money. They also held their traditional staff vs Year 8 basketball match.
Royston Rugby Club raised £200 with a touch tournament for the cause.
Six teams were registered for the tournament, with all getting into the spirit of the event by wearing fancy dress – the competition winners were the under-17 boys.
