The MPs for North East Herts and South Cambs have reacted to the Boundary Commission’s final proposals published on Monday, which would see The Mordens, Bassingbourn, Melbourn and Meldreth wards go to a new Letchworth and Royston constituency.

The changes mean that Shingay-cum-Wendy, Tadlow, Whaddon, Meldreth, Shepreth, Melbourn, Flint Cross, Dyer’s Green, Bassingbourn-cum-Kneesworth, Abington Pigotts, Litlington, the Mordens, North Brook End, Heydon, Great Chishill and Little Chishill would go to to the newly-named constituency of Letchworth and Royston if a parliamentary vote is passed.

South Cambs MP Heidi Allen said: “Throughout the consultation period, I made strong representations to the Boundary Commission demonstrating why I believed my southern villages should remain within South Cambs’ boundaries.

“The commission’s reasoning was that these villages held good cross-border links with their proposed new constituency and that these Cambridgeshire villages could adapt to representation from a Hertfordshire MP.

“I understand that the review’s prime objective is to equalise the size of constituencies, ensuring everyone’s vote will carry equal weight however, I am saddened that South Cambs will lose these wards.

“I’m grateful to every resident who made a submission to the Boundary Review. This will be an enormous change, but I remain committed to assisting every single one of my constituents however I can, now and in the future.”

Sir Oliver Heald, who represents North East Herts, said: “We will have to see if these proposals are implemented, which depend on a parliamentary vote.

“I would be sad to lose any part of my existing constituency, having been MP for 26 years.

“I do know the villages in Cambridgeshire well having lived in Royston for 37 years.

“I have also worked closely with the South Cambridgeshire MPs on issues such as the cycle way between Cambridge and Royston, our shared rail user group concerns, employment opportunities for our area and our health services which are in the same NHS Clinical Commissioning Group.

“I know there are very many friendly links between the villages and the Royston area and, of course, we share the Royston Crow newspaper.

“I think the name of the new constituency does not really reflect its diverse and rural nature or the fact it spans counties.”
