Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown may be the name that springs to mind when blistering blue comedy crops up, but he’s not the only comic who makes a very nice living from being near to the knuckle.
Jimmy Jones – dubbed the Guvnor by old school gag fans – is in the front rank of old-fashioned adult humour, and was once a familiar TV face as one of the original club comics showcased in the groundbreaking The Comedians series.
Now you can catch him live at Stevenage’s Gordon Craig Theatre in a benefit gig for a new charity.
In his pomp he was pumping out 10 shows a week and during a career that has taken in TV, clubs and a hit spell in Las Vegas he was also a pioneer of the stand-up comedy video.
Many of today’s successful comedians cite Jimmy as an inspiration and, in some cases, a mentor, and he has been listed as a favourite funnyman by stars as diverse as Tom Selleck, Benny Hill, Dudley Moore and Bill Wyman.
Jimmy is still widely regarded as a class live act, outrageous, outspoken and truly hilarious.
His Stevenage date on Saturday, June 20 – with support from acoustic, bass and beatbox band Spacegoat – is only open to those aged 18 and over because of the adult nature of the material.
But if you make a date to catch this master of mirth you’ll be helping to fund the work of Luton-based Transitions UK, which supports young people aged 15 to 25 years with a range of needs including learning disabilities, mental health needs, substance abuse or who are at risk of offending.
The charity works across Herts, Beds and Bucks and aims to become a national force.
Tickets are £20, call the box office on 01438 363200 or visit the website at www.gordon-craig.co.uk to book.
