A group of people who work together to trace their respective family histories is marking its 20th anniversary.
The Letchworth and District Family History Group was formed by Robin and Janis Hall back in 1995.
The group’s members will celebrate on Wednesday, November 18, at the Mrs Howard Hall in Norton Way, from 8pm. Former members are welcome.
“I’ve traced my family back to the 1500s, in Bristol,” said Ann Searle, the group’s chairwoman.
“One of my ancestors was mayor of Bristol. He met Queen Elizabeth I when she visited.
“Later, a visiting earl was rather rude to my ancestor. The Queen summoned this earl, slapped him across the face, fined him and committed him to the Tower for a week.
“Another of our members, Jim Jurdon, found a write-up of a mid-19th-century marriage in the newspaper library in Middlesex that helped him trace his family back 100 years.”
