Crowds came out in force for this year’s Ashwell at Home celebration on Sunday, which honoured war, women and community.

The 35th annual event commemorated the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, and the centenary of women first getting the vote.

Committee member David Hall told the Crow: “It was a great success, there were lots of smiling faces.

“We have a different theme each year, and it was decided that with this year being the centenary of the end of the First World War, we would go with that and honour the Suffragettes and women getting the vote as well.

“We have had good feedback about the event so we’re pleased.”

Highlights included a Suffragette demonstration, Votes for Women readings, dancing Morris men and a poppy trail walk and talk.

There was also a talk by author Alan Evenson about The Bury as a First World War convalescence hospital, 16 gardens opened for the public to explore as well as live music performances
