RECYCLING in North Herts has increased by almost 40 per cent with the help of a £74,570 promotion grant. After funding enabled North Hertfordshire District Council to carry out a doorstep campaign, recycling increased from 20 per cent in 2004-5 to 27 per cent so far in 2005-6. Portfolio holder for waste and the environment Cllr Bill Davidson said: "Engaging the public is one of the most important challenges we face if we are to continue to improve our recycling performance and meet national targets." The Government-funded grant paid for a trained canvasser to advise residents about recycling. The money also funded advertisements and the production of information leaflets to raise recycling awareness. Cllr Davidson said the grant had a "significant impact on recycling performance".
