Step out for good cause

EVERYONE will be in the pink on Sunday.

Then more than 300 people will be taking part in the Royston Pink Ribbon Run Walk on Therfield Heath.

The organisers are hoping to raise thousands of pounds for the Cancer Research UK charity.

Last year the event raised £3,000.

Michaela Huffer, one of the organisers, who was diagnosed with a spinal tumour last September and told she would not walk again, is hoping to complete part of the three-mile event.

She is determined to take part in the event - after spending time recovering from a 14-hour operation and undergoing a course of radiotherapy.

And she will have support from her 60-year-old mum Dawn Goodings, who needs a knee operation, and her children, Frank and Madeleine.

In fact, her mum will be travelling from Norfolk in a mini-bus with a group of 12 supporters.

"It's a long way to come to walk three miles," said Michaela.

The event will be started by Nigel Willimer, one of the partners of Royston chartered accountants Watts Knowles. The company is one of the sponsors of the Pink Ribbon Run Walk.

Mr Willimer will also be judging the best pink costumes on the day.

There is also a team from Bumpkins nursery in Whaddon, and women representing Wash Me! Iron Me! will be competing in smartly ironed pink shirts.

Three teachers from St Mary's School in Royston will also be taking part in the event.

Michaela said: "The Pink Ribbon Run Walk is for everyone. I'm going to be last, so everyone else knows they are safe to enter."

Over recent weeks Maurice Hill, of Royston Runners, has been running absolute beginner training sessions on Therfield Heath.

And to make sure everyone is in the pink, Richard Wisdom, of Sports Kit in High Street, Royston, has been turning out pink T-shirts in support of the event.

Richard and his wife Michelle, and 18-month-old daughter Olivia, will be taking part in the run walk.
