AN alcohol-free zone in Royston town centre will have a 'positive' effect in deterring anti-social behaviour, according to Herts Police.
The zone which was enforced last week will be in place for an initial two-year period.
It means anyone found drinking alcohol in Priory Memorial Gardens, Fish Hill, High Street, and Market Hill, will be committing an offence.
Royston Community Police Officer Julie-Ann Cundell said: "We haven't had a chance for the alcohol ban to kick in yet, but we are confident it will only have a positive effect on the town.
"Hopefully it will reduce the amount of underage drinkers in the area, and stop the amount of damage happening, including small time criminal damage.
"It's something that's been on the agenda for some time and something that I'm trying to tackle."
There are now signs in the town highlighting the alcohol free zones.
