ROYSTON mayor Lynn Berry visited one of her chosen charities and described what she saw as "wonderful".

Councillor Berry attended the Royston Day Centre to meet members and volunteers.

She said: "When I visited they were painting, playing cards, and generally enjoying themselves."

Centre organiser Pat Turner said: "We are delighted to be one of Lynn's two chosen charities. Her fundraising will help in a lot of ways."

The day centre, in Upper King Street, has been providing services for elderly and handicapped people for more than 25 years.

It is part-funded by the county council, and is a registered charity manned entirely by volunteers.

Cllr Berry said: "They rely so much on volunteers and donations and fundraising. The volunteers give up a lot of their time and seeing first hand what they do was wonderful."

Mrs Turner said: "We are always looking for new volunteers, and they are vitally important. They are very hard to come by, but we find that when they do come to us they tend to stay. I believe it is a two-way thing, as the volunteers get a lot out of their time here as well."

Cllr Berry, who is also supporting Meldreth Manor School, has already helped raise more than £2,000 for the centre and will continue her support throughout the year.

On Saturday she will be holding a quiz at the town hall to raise more funds.
