THE animals did not quite come two-by-two - but there were enough to take their place at this year's animal blessing service in Royston Parish Church on Sunday.

And the Rev Les Harman, vicar of Royston, pointed out that such a service was not simply just a "gimmick".

He told pet-owners that there was certainly a place in the church for all creatures great and small.

And in an address Tony Mills, a licensed reader at the church, stressed the importance of animals in people's lives.

"People have a love of animals and even with the stresses of modern life they cannot be forgotten," he said.

But he warned that there were animals across the world which were in danger because of man encroaching on their habitats.

And he urged everyone to check when buying goods that they came from a countries which were practising ethical policies.

He said that this, at least, would help in the battle to save endangered species.

"Animals of all kinds share the world with us," said Mr Mills. "They are in every way companions, protectors and providers."

A collection at the service was donated to Hula, Homeless, Unwanted, Lost Animals, and the Cat Feral Plan.
