THE longest-serving members of a village community will be opening a church fete on Saturday.

Peggy Wells, Daphne James, Bessie Smith, Sylvia Pardoe and Ted Webb will open Whaddon's annual fete at 2pm.

The vintage villagers were born in Whaddon and most of them have lived there for about 70 years.

Clare Byatt, a member of the church fete sub-committee, said: "I think it's an interesting bit of history to have such continuity.

"They will emphasise the importance of the church and the community.

"I'm extremely grateful they are prepared to open the fete. We hope everyone will enjoy what will be a lively and traditional church fete."

The event will be held on the recreation ground and in St Mary's Church yard.
