COUNCILLOR Alan Bardett, 70, has been elected chairman of North Herts District Council.
And over the next 12 months he says his aim is to help a range of charities in the area, rather than support one in particular.
Cllr Bardett, who was elected to the district council almost five years ago, represents the Knebworth ward, and has also served as a parish councillor on Codicote Parish Council.
He said: "I am passionate about trying to protect rural aspects of North Herts."
In his working life, Cllr Bardett spent eight years in the nuclear power industry before moving into IT.
His vice-chairman will be Councillor Allison Ashley, whose husband Derrick is an elected member of Herts County Council.
