THE introduction of a pinch-point could solve problems over heavy traffic damaging the ancient Royston Cave.
The idea came from Royston's county councillor Doug Drake during a meeting of Royston Town Council's general purposes and highways committee on Monday evening.
Cllr Drake said that this could be a "practical way" of solving the long-running problem of heavy vehicles using Melbourn Street, Royston.
It has long been claimed that heavy lorries were causing damage to the cave.
The issue of Melbourn Street is to be discussed next month at a meeting of North Herts District Council's Royston area committee.
Other suggestions which are being reviewed include the introduction of bollards and making Melbourn Street one-way.
There has, too, been a suggestion in recent years, to simply introduce a weight-limit in Melbourn Street.
Cllr Rod Kennedy said: "There is no need for having heavy goods vehicles using Melbourn Street. It is simply being used as a short-cut.
"It's beyond belief that there cannot be a weight limit introduced," said Cllr Kennedy. "We shouldn't be accepting excuses from Herts County Council."
Area committee chairman Cllr Fiona Hill told members: "There is nothing ruled out and we are pushing for positive action.
