IT was 55 years ago that Britain was on the verge of celebrating the Festival of Britain. The idea behind events across the country was to show Britain making progress after six years of world war. In Royston, there was a Festival Week which was due to culminate in a bank holiday show - but it became the victim of the weather. One event which did take place was the unveiling of a plaque in the Priory Memorial Gardens to commemorate a Festival of Britain award gained by architect Arthur Whydale for his design of the gardens. Col Eric Phillips, who was then chairman of the Royston Urban District Council, unveiled the plaque. He is seen in the photograph of the time with Cllr Arthur Cain who had been secretary of the festival committee. The unveiling ceremony took place on August 5, 1951. - What are your memories of the Festival of Britain?
