JOHN Downing is right to join the calls for a referendum on the new EU Treaty implementing the repackaged EU Constitution (Crow Postbag, August 30).

In 2005 the Government promised to let the people have their say and they should stick to that promise.

I am surprised that John should have a doubt about my views. I wrote to him on August 7 saying : "Conservatives are demanding a referendum on the new EU Treaty and are in favour of a referendum for any significant constitutional change. You don't need to worry I am for a referendum."

It was a strong campaign by Conservatives with media support which led to the 2005 Blair/Brown promise of a referendum.
