AMANDA Hinton and her mother Barbara identified every player in last week's Crow Nostalgia football picture.

And the photograph included Jack Wiltshire, Amanda's granddad and Barbara's father.

Barbara Hinton, 74, from Royston, said: "I was reading the paper when I suddenly recognised the old photograph.

"When I looked closer, I realised it was my dad Jack, with his old football team. I couldn't believe what I was seeing."

The picture shows Jack who was a special constable in the Royston police, aged 20, lining up with his old Royston YMCA team mates for the 1922-23 season photograph.

Amanda, 45, and also from Royston, said: "When I first saw the photo I pointed out that one looked quite like my cousin, when in fact it was actually my granddad.

"It was a lovely moment that took mum back to her dad's past.

"I was surprised because I didn't know that he used to play football."

The photograph was also identified by Audrey Rayment, and her father Harold Jellis is also in the picture.

"The team was based at the Church House, Church Lane. The home ground was a pitch on the heath, situated in the mouth of the valley," she said.

"The Rev Kilbey took great interest in the lads of the town and was always on the touchline at every home game."

Mrs Rayment also said that the team used to travel to away matches on bicycles.
