General Byng visited camp. No parade, he visited every tent, speaking to all. I was feeling worse. Sleeping nearly all day and voice bad with gas. That night went to sleep and on the 7th woke up in the 3rd Australian hospital at Abbeville. – June 5, 1918.

Allowed to get up for the first time. Had been air raids every night. All who were fit to move had to retreat to underground dugouts during raids. Others had their bed lowered to the floor.
The sisters stuck it well. During the raids they would wander from bed to bed, sit talking to those who suffered with shattered nerves. Some of the lads in the ward with me were complete wrecks.
Bombs dropped near enough to be unpleasant. Petrol dump was hot one night and blazed for several days.
