I THOROUGHLY endorse the comments of your correspondent (Crow Postbag, November 15) relating to street cleaning in the town centre, both on grounds of the daily noise nuisance caused to residents and of the cost to ratepayers.

I feel sure that this task could be performed at least as well, and probably better, by manual cleaning operators who would not need to be constantly covering the same ground such as Fish Hill.

The only way for vehicles to access Market Hill, the High Street and King Street is via Fish Hill.

This is an extremely busy thoroughfare which has to cope with a great deal of traffic so the pressure of wear and tear is intense.

Until recently the road surface was badly broken-up and a danger to pedestrians.

It has recently been re-surfaced so any reduction of heavy traffic can only be a good thing.

The removal of these monster mechanical road-sweepers would be a step in the right direction.
