THERE is no doubt that the rebuilding of the public conveniences at Fish Hill, Royston, was an expensive piece of work and I admit that I was not convinced that the result would be worth it in light of the uncertainty surrounding the toilets by the bus station.
However, having taken my young son to the Priory Memorial Gardens recently and having had need of the facility, I would like to congratulate North Herts District Council on a job well done.
The facilities are comfortable and warm (the heating is a nice touch) and appear to have been designed with ease of maintenance in mind.
I have heard some reports that people are unhappy with the unisex design of the toilets.
I find this a little strange as there is no waiting area indoors to mingle with other users. You simply open the outside door and then lock it behind you.
This is no different than using a single room convenience in a shop or restaurant.
I suspect that those knocking the design have never actually used it or possibly even seen it, and instead are simply complaining out of habit or as part of a wider plan to criticise everything our councils do.
I am all for raising criticisms when valid, but I also believe that credit should be given when due.

Royston Town Council
