WITH reference to the latest instalment of the railway crossing saga, I feel I share the general view of incomprehension expressed by your correspondent from Morton Street, Royston (Crow Postbag, April 6).
It was only a matter of a few weeks ago that we were being told that the police had recently confirmed that the illegal crossing of the railway line was largely confined to the Green Street/
Morton Street area and not, as had been previously thought, Coombes Hole.
This fact appeared in the same article with the announcement that for a number of reasons Herts County Council had determined by a majority vote that an underpass would be built at the Green Street/Morton Street junction.
How the county council highway and transport panel has arrived at the conclusion that the site of the underpass had to be Coombes Hole is completely unexplained, and with the major electrical and gas services running through the area quite illogical.
I will be interested to see exactly what sort of public consultation exercise is undertaken by the county council.

Presumably it will not involve asking the residents of Brooke Road and Byron Road if they are looking forward to having months of disruption and noise while the underpass is built, followed by years of misery as their privacy and security is slowly eroded.
