I WAS interested to read in The Crow letters about shops in Royston and the drop in customers last year. I do most of my shopping in the town as I always want to support our shopkeepers. I was amazed to be told by a friend, who lives in a Cambridgeshire village, that on Saturday, February 11 she went to two shops at 9am that were closed and one at 9.30am with the doors locked. At the last shop a man stated the owner would be there soon, who then arrived with a newspaper tucked under arm - a priority no doubt. My friend gets here by car so time is of the essence because of car park fees. Other people also were trying the doors with no success so probably not all of them returned as some will not wait. I know car owners would like free car parks, but when they were free in the dim and distant past most spaces were occupied all day by workers in the town centre. At least now shoppers can come here and find some places to park near shops. JOY R HOWES Sun Hill Royston
