IT may appear to be a case of minor criminal damage.
But for anyone who believes that wrecking a display around the unique war memorial in Steeple Morden is simply a petty act is mistaken.
Monuments such as war memorials deserve to be respected.
And that is especially so in this case as the ground where the vandalism took place happens to be the resting place of the ashes of a former US pilot who served during the Second World War when the site was an airbase.
David Crow, who has long been associated with the upkeep of the war memorial is quite right to be angry.
It is not the behaviour to be expected when it comes to monuments of this kind which honour the bravery of those who gave their lives in the Second World War.
There is no need for such behaviour: and especially at a place which is there to remind us all about the cost of peace in human lives.
